Comprehending Social Situations and Social Language
A Structured Practice Book
by Jean Gilliam DeGaetano; illustrated by Kevin M. Newman

Ages 7 to 11

We all know kids who appear to be a little "out of it." They just can't seem to read social cues. But with the guidance offered in this 92-page workbook, they can learn how to listen, observe, connect, and respond in social situations.

As a teacher, counselor, or parent reads each story aloud, the child views the illustrations. The child experiences auditory and visual cues simultaneously. Because each picture shows only one scene in the social story, and the story involves at least one character who is not shown in the illustration, the child must look and listen to fully understand the story. By answering questions about each story, the child gradually begins to recognize interpersonal cues, connect with the situations depicted, and internalize appropriate social language. Repetition and practice are the keys to success, and this workbook offers both.
