Handbook of Individualized Strategies for Building Character
by W. George Selig, Ed.D., Alan A. Arroyo, Ed.D., and Shauna E. Tonkin, Ph.D.

Research consistently shows that attachment relationships predict social and moral outcomes. This unique new handbook presents a model of classroom interaction based on caring relationships similar to those found in a successful family. Its goal is to build positive relationships in the classroom, thereby helping students internalize healthy character traits. The strategies used to reach this goal are individualized--they take into account each student's character formation issues, preferred behavior style, and level of motivation.

The book shows how to classify character issues and how to determine each student's motivation level and behavior style. Once the teacher or counselor has done this, he or she can chose from 39 specific character-building strategies listed in the handbook. The strategies selected are likely to be effective because they are keyed to the student's particular problem, motivation level, and behavior style. A reproducible Character-Building Worksheet is included in this spiralbound handbook in order to help teachers identify student variables and implement appropriate intervention strategies.

Because it integrates character development into normal classroom instruction, the model presented here allows educators to maintain their focus on academics while also addressing issues such as self-control, peer rejection, bullying, lying, and lack of empathy. By building caring relationships within the classroom, teachers can help students develop positive moral and social values.
